If you think about it, sound plays an important part in our lives. Both positive and negative.

Sound has the power to change our moods and even our bodies.

Hard driving rock music elevates the blood pressure and gets your pulse pounding in time. That's why you hear it so often in health clubs and at athletic events.

The rhythmic sound of surf washing a sandy beach calms the nerves and brings on a relaxed state. The slow, rhythmic beat of the surf can be hypnotic.

Why not deliberately use sound to help you bring what you want into your life?

Improve your health.

A few years ago, when I went in for a routine physical, my doctor took my BP twice, then urgently handed me a pill and waited 20 minutes to try again. I left her office that day with a bag of sample blood pressure medicine, and the warning that I would be taking those little pills daily for the rest of my life.

I couldn't accept that. Seeking alternatives, I read an article about using bio-feedback to consciously change unconscious body functions. One of the results was a subject controlling their blood pressure.

I know this doesn't have much to do with singing bowls, but hang with me a bit longer and I'll pull it together.

I started using meditation and guided relaxation to reduce the stress that was causing the elevated BP. Long story short, I went back for another physical six months later. I hadn't taken a pill in weeks, yet my BP was completely normal. I haven't taken one of those pills since...

It turns out that there may be some scientific basis for the effects of sound on the human body. We're made up of atoms, and atoms are made of tiny, vibrating bits of electrical charge. One of Newton's laws is often quoted as "a body in stable motion will maintain that motion unless acted on by an outside force."

The vibration of sound, such as the music of the singing bowls, plays the outside force to the stable motion of our bodies' atoms. Choose the right music and you can influence your quality of life.

Guided meditation and visualization can be highly effective tools for effecting physical changes. Music, such as that from the singing bowls of Tibet, is an aid to aligning your physical self with what your spirit desires.

Several CDs are available, but one of the more highly recommended at Amazon.com was Seven Metals Singing Bowls of Tibet. The average review was 4.5 stars. Here's a sample:

"Nobody can describe the sound of these bowls to one who hasn't heard them, nor can one adequately describe their effect on mind and body and, therefore, soul to one who hasn't experienced them. I do recommend playing them at a reasonably low volume and, as mentioned in the program notes, without headphones. I can indeed believe that the vibrations have an effect on the air, and on any living things. I will be observing my sole ivy plant, watching for any changes in it. I can well believe that the plant will benefit as well as myself from repeated listenings to this recording. I did try doing some inspirational reading while the CD was playing, however for me, it didn't work well. I feel it's most effective when not trying to fill the mind with any thought or concept."
