Hole In One
Joe was addicted to golf. He played every weekend. He stopped by the driving range on the way home from work every night and practiced until dark. The one thing Joe had never done was hit a hole in one.
Joe's wife had no interest in golf. She did miss Joe, though, and one day asked if she could play, too. Joe, being smarter than he looked, agreed. He figured that she'd come out one time, play a few holes and get bored.
They came to a short par three. Joe teed up the ball, pointed at the flag, and told his wife to just try to hit the ball into the hole.
Joe's wife wound up, hit the ball and watched as it rolled into the hole-- a hole in one on her first real try.
"Honey, that's amazing! I've been playing for years and I've never hit a hole in one. Incredible!"
Joe's wife was not impressed. "Joe, what's the big deal? You told me to hit it in the hole and that's what I did. Now what have you really been doing with all that money you said went for golf lessons?"
OK, it's an old joke. The truth is, for the average golfer the odds of getting a hole in one are pretty slim. Yet so many have attempted it, insurance companies that cater to charity golf events have actuarial tables to predict a hole in one.
Those policies are not very expensive.
Think about that the next time you play a charity event and the guy at the hole in one contest tries to tempt you into parting with more than you would contribute if all they had was a kettle for donations.
