Friends TV Show on DVD

How much do we like "Friends"? Let's see...

The Friends TV series dominated network TV on Thursday nights for the best part of ten years. Now the Complete Collector's Box Set finished 2006 as one of Amazon.com's best selling collections. (see Recommended, right-->)

But why do we like it so much?

Like Seinfeld, this series is character-driven. On the face of it, Friends is another tv show about nothing. Except we get wrapped up in the lives and loves of some very human characters...

Rachel Green is the rich, spoiled "daddy's girl". As the plot begins, Rachel has just left her fiancé Barry at the altar. Now she's moving to the city to live with her best friend, Monica. After moving to the city, Rachel got her first job as a waitress in the coffee house Central Perk. She later became an assistant buyer and personal shopper at Bloomingdale's, and later a buyer for Ralph Lauren.

Monica Geller is a neurotically clean chef. Monica struggled for success the first several seasons, but eventually became head chef at a well-respected restaurant.

Phoebe Buffay is a quirky, New Age, street-smart masseuse and folk/acoustic singer-songwriter. Phoebe is the "free spirit" of the bunch (and the quirkiest) and Monica's old roommate. Phoebe made a living as a singer-songwriter and a masseuse (she also had lots of odd jobs throughout the series).

Joey Tribbiani is a good-looking ladies man and simple-minded actor. After on-and-off success as a soap opera actor, Joey's career eventually stabilized with a regular part on a soap opera from which he had been fired earlier in the series' run (along with a few odd jobs, including Robert DeNiro's "butt double").

Chandler Bing is a wise-cracking office drone. Chandler worked his way up in data processing and eventually switched to a career in advertising (by the last few seasons) after quitting his previous job.

Ross Geller is a nerdy but romantic paleontologist and Monica's brother. As the series opens, Ross is newly divorced after his wife left him for another woman. Ross has had a thing for Rachel since they were kids.

The settings for the show include Monica's apartment, Chandler and Joey's apartment, Ross's apartment, Phoebe's apartment and the local coffee house, Central Perk. Constant story lines throughout the series are the on/off romance between Ross and Rachel and, later in the series, the developing relationship between Chandler and Monica.
